Foot & Ankle

Foot and Ankle: Common Conditions and Care

The foot and ankle comprise a complex structure of bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles, essential for balance, mobility, and weight-bearing. Injuries and conditions affecting these structures can significantly impair daily activities and quality of life.

Common Conditions:

  • Sprains and Strains: Often caused by twisting injuries, leading to ligament or muscle damage.
  • Fractures: Bone breaks in the foot or ankle, commonly resulting from trauma.
  • Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, causing heel pain.
  • Achilles Tendinitis: Overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, leading to pain and stiffness.
  • Arthritis: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis can cause joint pain and deformity.
  • Bunions and Hammertoes: Structural deformities causing discomfort and difficulty in walking.

Diagnosis and Treatment:
Evaluation includes a physical exam, imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, and, if needed, biomechanical assessments.

Treatment ranges from conservative measures such as rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE), along with physical therapy and orthotics, to medications for pain and inflammation. Severe cases may require surgical interventions, such as ligament repair, tendon reconstruction, or joint fusion/replacement.

A multidisciplinary approach ensures optimal recovery, allowing individuals to return to pain-free, active lifestyles. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing long-term complications.
